Fleet Navigation Software Checklist: 10 Questions to Ask
Before you roll a navigation app out to drivers, run any option through these questions.
- Can you set a truck profile? Height, weight, length, axles, and hazmat status should all be inputs.
- Does routing respect restrictions? Bridges, weight limits and truck bans should change the route, not just show a warning.
- How current is the restrictions data? Ask how often it is updated.
- Is pricing per driver or per fleet? Fleet pricing for several trucks is usually cheaper than every driver buying individually.
- Who pays? A company plan means drivers are not paying out of pocket.
- Is it easy for drivers to use? If drivers will not use it, the best data does not help.
- Does it work offline? Coverage gaps are common on long rural stretches.
- Can you manage accounts centrally? Adding and removing drivers should not need a support call.
- What support do you get? A real contact for fleets, not only a help center.
- Can you try it first? Ask about a trial or pilot with one or two trucks.
Once you've picked a tool, the next question is getting drivers to actually use it: see our driver onboarding guide. And navigation is only one piece of the software stack: see ELD vs navigation app for how the two fit together.
