Truck GPS for Small Fleets: What to Buy When You Run 3–10 Trucks
Small fleets sit in an awkward spot. Enterprise telematics is built for hundreds of trucks and priced to match, but handing every driver a different consumer app gives you no consistency. Here is a practical way to think about it.
Start with the problem, not the product
For most small fleets the real risks are routing risks: a driver on an unfamiliar road, a low bridge, a weight-limited street, a detour that burns hours. That is a navigation problem. Fleet management features such as ELD integration and dispatch are separate decisions you can make separately.
Three common setups
- Each driver picks their own app. Cheapest on paper, but restrictions data and truck settings vary, and drivers often pay out of pocket.
- Dedicated truck GPS devices. Purpose-built, but a hardware purchase per truck, and maps need updating.
- One company-paid navigation app for the fleet. Same truck-safe routing for every driver, billed once, and easy to add or remove trucks.
Why the 3-truck line matters
Some providers price fleet plans differently once you reach a handful of trucks. Trucker Path, for example, offers a discounted plan for fleets of 3 or more trucks, called TP Fleet Nav. It is worth comparing against what you are paying today, per driver.
A simple way to decide
- Count your trucks and what each driver spends on navigation today.
- List your real constraints: height, weight, hazmat, preferred lanes.
- Ask any provider for a pilot with one or two trucks before committing.
